Position Title: Asst Director-Facilities/Heating Plant

Department:  Plant Operations

Term of Assignment: Continuing

Term End Date, If Applicable:             

FLSA Status:   Exempt = not eligible for overtime

Work Schedule: Traditionally Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with occasional evening or weekend work required. Annual plant shutdown is on the weekend after winter commencement. Extended hours may be required during busier times such as the construction season and plant shutdowns.

Salary: Targeted Salary Range: $80,000-$85,570

Travel: Less than 10%

Brief Statement of Duties

Brief Statement of Duties: Responsible for providing leadership to Plant Operations to include: directing the plant operations staff responsible for operating and performing preventive, routine and emergency maintenance in the plant; and management of contractors to complete maintenance repairs.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree

Discipline/Degree Area: 

Required Specialized Training/Certifications: 

Required Minimum Work Experience:  Five years experience in steam production/distribution.
Three years experience in construction and/or maintenance methods, coordination, and/or inspection.
Two years of supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties: 

Knowledge of operation, maintenance, safety, testing and reporting of facility management, associated
with steam production and distribution systems.
Knowledge of standard operating procedures, relevant codes, testing/inspection requirements and
regulations.
Knowledge and ability to troubleshoot and coordinate the repair of boilers, pumps, compressors, electric
motors, water treatment systems and automated controls.
Ability to develop, maintain, and analyze operational trends and steam/electrical production data to
quickly and effectively identify and correct system abnormalities and/or failures.
Ability to document, track and maintain operational data to support all regulatory and environmental
reporting as required by the State of Michigan and the US Environmental Protection Agency.
Demonstrated strong supervisory and management skills.
Computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet, web-based programs).
Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively deal with a broad variety of people and
prepare quality correspondence, reports, and other written materials.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Additional Desirable Qualifications: 

Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field.
Licensed professional engineer registration in the State of Michigan.
Experience in preparing, reviewing, and/or critiquing construction design documents.
Supervision of technical trades in union shop.
Knowledge and experience with electric generation systems.
Knowledge and experience in engineering for schools or institutions; preferably a university facilities department.
Budget and cost estimating experience.
