Position Title: Graphic Designer I, Graphic Designer II, Senior Graphic Designer or Art Director/Graphic Designer

Department:  University Marketing/Commnctns

FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt = overtime eligible

Work Schedule: Traditionally Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm with occasional evening and/or weekend work required.

One position is available with the potential to be filled at any of the listed levels consistent with the selected applicants experience. Levels include: Graphic Designer I, Graphic Designer II, Senior Graphic Designer or Art Director/Graphic Designer.

Salary: Targeted salary range: Graphic Designer I: $40,800-$43,860; Graphic Designer II: $43,840-$47,100; Senior Graphic Designer: $50,880-$54,696; Art Director/Graphic Designer: $65,600-$70,500

Travel: Less than 10%

Brief Statement of Duties

Brief Statement of Duties: Graphic Designer I: Under direction, collaborate with individuals across campus to organize and produce professional, creative and custom graphic designs for a variety of NMU clients. These include but are not limited to postcards, brochures, posters, pamphlets, social media graphics, advertisements, video assets and more.

Graphic Designer II: Under direction, collaborate with individuals across campus to conceptualize, organize and produce professional, creative and custom graphic designs for a variety of NMU clients. These include but are not limited to postcards, brochures, posters, pamphlets, social media graphics, advertisements, video assets, page and publication layout, interactive media and digitally focused graphic design.

Senior Graphic Designer: Collaborate with individuals across campus to conceptualize, organize and produce professional, creative and custom graphic designs for a variety of NMU clients.

Art Director/Graphic Designer: Responsible to conceptualize, organize and produce professional, creative and custom graphic designs for a variety of NMU clients.

Senior Graphic Designer and Art Director/Graphic Designer: Graphic designs include but are not limited to postcards, brochures, posters, pamphlets, social media graphics, advertisements, publications, micro websites and more. Proactively provide innovative ideas and creative solutions that propel Northern's business goals. Provide concept and execute photo and video direction to assist the photo/video team with dynamic visuals for social media and athletic experiences. Provide sourcing and production of promotional items like wearables, backgrounds and event giveaways. Take the lead on managing many clients and projects, therefore playing an integral part in the direction of the university's overall creative strategy. Coordinate with the Publications Director and Creative Director to prioritize, develop and implement design projects and production schedules.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree

Discipline/Degree Area:  Graphic Design or related field

Required Specialized Training/Certifications: 

Required Minimum Work Experience:  Graphic Designer I:
Some professional experience in graphic design.
Experience with:
-creating original content using programs within Adobe Creative Suite;
-developing and refining creative concepts for print distribution;
-developing and refining creative concepts for video integration.

Graphic Designer II:
Three years' experience in graphic design.
Experience with:
-creating original content using the programs within Adobe Creative Suite;
-developing and refining creative concepts for print distribution;
-developing and refining creative concepts for video integration;
-developing and refining creative concepts for digital distribution;
-revising concepts with client feedback while maintaining brand direction.

Senior Graphic Designer:
Five years' experience in graphic design.
Significant experience with:
-creating original content using the programs within Adobe Creative Suite;
-developing and refining creative concepts for print distribution;
-developing and refining creative concepts for digital distribution, including website work;
-developing and executing creative direction for video and photo team;
-designing for social media;
-designing magazine and other publication layouts and production;
-sourcing and purchasing print, large format and promotional items;
-providing estimates to customers based on customer specifications.

Art Director/Graphic Designer:
Six years' experience in graphic design.
Significant experience with:
-creating original content using the programs within the Adobe Creative Suite;
-developing and refining creative concepts for print distribution;
-developing and refining creative concepts for digital distribution, including website work;
-developing and executing creative direction for video and photo team;
-designing for social media;
-designing magazine and other publication layouts and production;
-souring and purchasing print, large format and promotional items;
-providing estimates to customers based on customer specifications.

Graphic Designer II:

Graphic Designer II and Senior Graphic Designer:
Ability to work efficiently and effectively, holding self accountable to deadlines.

Senior Graphic Designer and Art Director/Graphic Designer:
Demonstrated skills in illustration/storyboarding.
Ability to design for web and other digital distribution platforms.
Ability to integrate graphics and direction into video projects.
Attention to detail in order to facilitate a strong editing process that includes numerous and intricate edits on design projects to improve messaging.

Art Director/Graphic Designer:
High-level skill with Adobe Creative Suite and other professional-level design software.
Knowledge of graphic design theory.
Demonstrated skills of creative, communication and project management.
Demonstrated ability to create brand-unified, high quality print and digital materials.
Demonstrated skills in topography, image creation and color theory.
Ability to lead a team of designers through large and complex projects.
Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and decision making skills.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Additional Desirable Qualifications: 

Graphic Designer I, Graphic Designer II and Senior Graphic Designer:
Higher education experience.
Motion graphics and animation experience in Adobe After Effects.

Graphic Designer II and Senior Graphic Designer:
Augmented reality and interactive media experience.

Art Director/Graphic Designer:
Skills in forms of illustration.
Experience in higher education design.
Supervisory experience.
