Brief Statement of Duties
Brief Statement of Duties: The tenure-track appointment will begin in August 2023. Duties include teaching 12 credits per semester, teaching undergraduate and possibly online graduate literacy education courses, and other related courses as needed. The candidate is expected to maintain an active research agenda within the discipline and contribute to advising and service at the department and university levels. We seek candidates committed to culturally responsive, inclusive, and equitable educational practices that advance educational excellence for all students. This is an on-campus position.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Education: Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree
Discipline / Degree Area:
Doctorate in Education, literacy, or related fields from an accredited institution. An official doctorate transcript must be received by August 21, 2023. 

 

Required Specialized Training/Certifications: Doctorate in Education, literacy, or related fields from an accredited institution. An official doctorate transcript must be received by August 21, 2023.
Required Minimum Work Experience: At least three years of full-time teaching experience as a K-8 classroom teacher; commitment to student-centered learning, teacher preparation, and excellence in teaching; willingness to support the mission of the College (https://nmu.edu/education/index.php/).
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties: Commitments to equity and justice-oriented education.

Ability to articulate the necessary elements of an equitable and just classroom setting that supports learner development.

Knowledge of current research related to teaching elementary (K-8) reading/literacy, elementary curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Evidence of teaching excellence.

Experience with integrating technology, digital resources, and learning management systems into one’s pedagogy.

Interest and/or ability to develop new curricula in undergraduate and graduate programs.

Evidence of conducting scholarly research.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Additional Desirable Qualifications: Experience in teaching in a university setting.

Experience supervising student teachers.

Experience teaching upper elementary and/or middle grades.

Experience in field-based teacher education programs.

Experience in creating/leading professional development activities for teachers.

Expertise in using technology for teaching and learning, including developing advanced pedagogies for teaching online courses.

Experience with service in a university setting at the departmental and college levels.

Evidence of a commitment to student success and collaboration with colleagues.

Knowledge of standards for professional organizations (e.g., National Council of Teachers of English [NCTE], International Literacy Association [ILA], and the National Association for Education of the Young Child [NAEYC]).
