Brief Statement of Duties
Brief Statement of Duties: Responsibilities include providing leadership for the Counseling and Consultation Services Department that prioritizes mental health within NMU's culture of student success and wellbeing. Assess the psychological needs of students and plan, organize, and direct counseling and consultation services which address those priorities. Provide student clinical evaluations and psychotherapeutic services (developmental, short-term, individual and group counseling), crisis intervention, and consultation and education for the campus community regarding mental health issues and student development. This is a campus-based position, and 25-50% of time is allocated for direct clinical services, depending on the needs of the department.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education: Master's Degree
Discipline / Degree Area: Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Counseling, or Clinical Social Work
Required Specialized Training/Certifications: Michigan State license in psychology, counseling, or clinical social work, or the proof of ability to transfer a license to Michigan within three months of hire date.
Required Minimum Work Experience: -Minimum of seven (7) years of experience (post-licensure) providing mental health counseling.
-Three or more years of combined experience in the following areas: as counselor in a university counseling center, as a supervisor, and as either director, assistant director or interim director of a university counseling center, or the equivalent clinical and administrative experience in organized health care settings with relevant populations.
-Demonstrated excellent clinical skills compatible with a brief treatment model. Experience in assessment, individual and group counseling, and crisis intervention.
-Philosophy and personality compatible with an outreach service model.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties: -Knowledge and practice of state and federal mental health laws and professional codes of conduct.
-Knowledge of current trends in providing mental health supports on college campuses, especially for rurally situated institutions. An holistic appreciation for student wellbeing and experience working across disciplines in integrated service environments.
-Strong clinical skills and experience working with diverse populations, including at-risk individuals.
-Demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities while ensuring clinical excellence in the provision of direct services.
-Strong analytical and conceptual skills.
-Demonstrated innovative leadership practices and exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication.
-Strong commitment to sustaining a collegial, equitable, and supportive environment for faculty and staff.
-Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive mental health issues.
-Computer experience, which must include abilities to work effectively with Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Additional Desirable Qualifications: -Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree.
-A record of leadership in university and/or professional organizations.
-"People skills," including collaboration, consensus building, and conflict resolution.
-Strong consultation skills.
-Specialized clinical expertise in areas such as trauma focused therapy, ACT, CBT, group work, etc.
