Brief Statement of Duties
Brief Statement of Duties: The School of Health and Human Performance at Northern Michigan University invites applications for a one-year term position at the rank of Instructor in the Outdoor Recreation, Leadership, and Management Bachelor’s Degree Program. This position will begin in August 2022. The successful candidate will be a strong teacher who will support our program’s mission to prepare critically mindful outdoor professionals. We seek an educator who can deliver quality, sustainable educational experiences grounded in experiential education and outdoor leadership, who can manage risks according to outdoor recreation industry standards, implement sustainable practices, and promote inclusion, social justice and environmental stewardship. This is a campus-based position.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education: Master's Degree
Discipline / Degree Area: Outdoor Recreation
Required Specialized Training/Certifications: Wilderness First Responder
Required Minimum Work Experience: The successful candidate must have earned a minimum of a Master's Degree (Doctorate preferred) from an accredited institution in outdoor recreation, adventure, leisure studies, or related field at the time of hire in a relevant field and experience teaching field-based courses with organizations including but not limited to NOLS, Outward Bound, or Wilderness Education Association. The candidate must also have a variety of outdoor technical skills, college teaching experience in the field of outdoor recreation and experiential education, a desire to teach content in both a classroom and field-based setting, and be Wilderness First Responder certified. Applicants must meet the requirements for teaching at the level of Instructor (Masters or A.B.D.) as described in the School of Health and Human Performance bylaws.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties: • Prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate students. Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
• Compile, administer, and grade examinations.
• Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.
• Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to assist students.
• Maintain student records, grades, and other required records for University compliance.
• Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, course materials (including textbooks) and handouts.
• Plan, evaluate, and revise course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
• Work in a safe manner observing safety, health and sanitation codes, regulations or practices required by the University and government authorities.
• Work in a positive and productive manner with a wide variety of NMU students, peers, and other employees, and external constituents.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Additional Desirable Qualifications: Additional desirable qualifications are experience working with diverse populations, relevant professional certifications, relevant field-based teaching experience, and involvement with professional organizations in the outdoor industry.
